UPDATE 1/16: There has been no form of communication from Zupan to me at this point. No one has contacted me to help make this profiling issue.. correct. This lack of communication displays commitment to the treatment I received from their store security person. I will continue to tell my story until someone from this company decides to contact me to situate this matter!!!
1/11: I just got profiled for being black by a security guard named Mathew Hill. My wife and I came into the store while visiting Portland for her bday week. We walked through the store for the bakery because I wanted something sweet. We stopped at a few counters that were giving out free food and drink goodies. I picked up a bag of crackers and cheese from one of the counters, but put it back because it had goat milk. We continued to peruse the store. Upon walking out, I was met by Mr. Mathew Hill who went in to all me where were the crackers I picked up. I stated that I put them back. I then told him that we could walk back over to the counter and speak to the woman there. He stated he did already. I then stated that I have no reason to steal crackers and asked if he wanted to check my my small booking. He said yes and I then opened it and showed him.
My wife and i left out of the store and waited for our ride. He came outside to watch us. I asked him for his name and told him that I would be reporting him. He gave a thumbs up action. I told him that he was wrong for profiling us. He then told me that he was going to call the cops on us for trespassing. I said we are not trespassing. We are on Starbucks property. Another guy came out of the store and begin to call us names and got in my wife’s face. I had to threaten to call the cops for him to back off. Mr. Mathew Hill continued to tell us that we needed to leave, while waiting for our ride. He continued to tell us that we were trespassing. Me store employees came out and did nothing to support us.
We are both Black women, in our 40’s with careers on vacation. We were profiled for being black. Nothing more, nothing less. I believed that he followed us around the store from the time we walked in to the time we reached the exit.. watching us. We were profiled!!!!!
