UPDATE FACT. It is not always easy to get fresh seafood on a weekend, let alone on a Monday as nobody really works on Sundays. Enter Angel from the seafood department. An assiduous employee who does not seek recognition but rather is inspired by helping the customer. I had to buy some mussels for a very important gastronomic preparation. He went out of his way to listen to me and did all he needed to do to get the freshest seafood possible. My guests were flabbergasted given what they felt were optimal gastronomic skills but the truth is I had the best ingredients thanks to Angel. In an age characterized by nameless statistics and at times overwhelming technology, we tend to forget that institutions and companies perform given the indefatigable efforts of fine human beings. Computers and software are a means to an end, not representing the final product galvanizing customer loyalty. Upon visiting the Whole Foods store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, I was reminded of this evasive fact by one amazing team member by the name of Kiara. She went out of her way in the most gracious manner to resolve a problem that neither she nor Whole Foods created when I lost a store gift card that had nearly $500.00 on it. Kiara and her team of supervisors who included Teari and Erica provided united support that was as seamless as it was intelligent. Kiara was never condescending or patronizing as she focused on finding a solution without sacrificing her own empathy and humanity. She fully understood if not internalized my predicament. This masterful display of interpersonal intelligence took place on a Saturday morning when many in our society do not seem to comprehend undertaking a sense of sacrifice while a work ethic is adhered to. Kiara's charisma, honesty and warm professionalism inspired me to fully trust her and realize that wealth is measured in human terms. UPDATE (More Good News) Perhaps this is not my first "go to" Whole Foods given the smaller size but one employee who works in the Seafood Department has made me realize it needs to be my first choice from now on. Although this location does not have as many offerings, he went out of his way to prepare what I was looking for and actually did a better job than the Manhattan locations. His name is Jeremy and he is an asset as loyal employee and quintessentially courteous human being.
