I just returned home from doing some last minute shopping at the Elmhurst location. Firstly, the 9pm closing time typically means that I’m rushing to get there in time. The downtown locations close at 10 which is much more convenient for customers, but it seems that customer service is not the priority at this location. Secondly, I arrived at 8:45 and went to the produce section to get grapes. Unfortunately for me, the grapes had all been put away. Yes, a grocery store that sells food puts away the food before they close! Why are they even open? When I asked one of the employees about this, he basically just shrugged his shoulders and told me that they have to put away the produce at 9. Again, the store closes at 9 and they are putting away the produce before they close! The obvious reason is that they don’t care if customers have access to produce when the store is open. Instead of having the employees close the store AFTER closing time, they have them close the store while it is supposedly OPEN! So this store management has basically opted to cut labor costs at the expense of customer service. This is particularly evident when you walk through the store and see all of the employees frantically stocking shelves and ignoring the customers. Thirdly, this store routinely doesn’t have at least one of the items that I came to purchase. This time was no exception. Finally, this location typically has one cashier open with a long line. The obvious intent is to force people to use the self checkout which also gets backed up. Again, this store has elected to cut the costs of cashiers at the expense of customers. Self checkout used to be for the convenience of customers who have a small amount of groceries and who want to get out quickly. At this store, it’s forced upon you so that they save money on cashiers. It is frustrating to pay the same high price for groceries that you scan and bag yourself. If I’m performing the tasks of your employees, shouldn’t I be compensated? Also, it is even more frustrating to have to stand in a line and wait for this privilege. In short, this store has elected to cut costs at the expense of customer service, and without passing along any of these savings to the customers.
