I bought a 2017 4Runner from out of state. Upon receiving it from delivery, I immediately took it to a mechanic not even 5 miles away. I expected some rust as it’s coming from the “rust belt”. However, while talking with the sales rep before purchase, I repeatedly asked if rust was an issue as that’s the only issue I couldn’t fix. I was told it had “a couple brown spots”. That was fraudulent. The mechanic immediately informed me the vehicle had significant rust. Upon getting another quote from industry rust removal experts, it’ll cost over 3k to try and keep the frame intact after it’s been sanded down and treated. The frame had already been rusted through. The brakes needed a complete replacement (brakes, pads, rotors and calipers), as the rust was so bad, they were no longer operational. It was a safety hazard to even drive it.
The back hatch or liftgate if you will, is so rusted, you can hear all the rust shaking around inside the liftgate when opening it or closing it. That’s not even the worst part. The locking mechanism that connects the tailgate to the vehicle, is so rusted, it doesn’t seat properly and rattles. Who knows if moisture is getting through or how long I have before it doesn’t close at all. I’ll need a completely new tailgate and of course, it’ll need to be painted. Obviously something insurance won’t cover. It’s very clear that they painted over it to try and disguise it but you’d never know until the tailgate is open.
Lastly, the tires. I went to Discount Tire to get a new set of wheels. 3 of the tires were over 5 years old at about 50% tread and the front passenger tire was brand new. Which is another safety issue. The lug nuts on the tire were replaced with new ones to hide the rust. It shows they intentionally were trying to hide it The spot for the spare underneath the vehicle was completely ruined. Unsalvageable. I’m not even able to keep a spare.
All of this is factual. This is bad business practice. Do not support.
