I work with mentally disabled adults. Today, I accompanied my client to the Hermantown Walmart where she had to return some coffee that was packaged in individual serving cups, which could not be used in her coffee maker. Associate Karen in Returns explained that groceries cannot be returned, only replaced with the exact same product. My client was quite upset, so Karen offered to call her supervisor to see if anything more could be done.
Team Lead Lynette came to assist, and upon learning that my client did not have a receipt and only knew the approximate date of purchase and other items that were purchase with the coffee, used that little bit of information and spent more than 30 minutes searching for that specific purchase.
While we were waiting for this search to be completed, another employee from my company saw us and said hello. It was then that I learned Hermantown Walmart actually employs 5 mentally handicapped adults who have job coaches just like me. I asked the individual if he was happy working there and he gave an enthusiastic thumbs up. My coworker said she has gotten overwhelmingly positive feedback about the whole experience.
In the end, my client's purchase was not found. Associate Karen and TeamLead Lynette stayed calm, personable, polite, and comforting while I tried to calm my client who was quite upset. A one-time exception for store credit was issued, and throughout the transaction of creating the store credit, Miss Lynnette continued to calmly reassure my client.
This entire visit was an impressive example wonderful treatment of differently abled people, and of Customer Service going far above and beyond.
