I am regretful to have made an attempt to shop here, approximately 2 hours before the time stamp of this post, on Christmas Eve… I had a few items in basket. Unfortunately I required an unexpected trip to the bathroom. I wheeled my basket towards the bathroom, going in a complete straight direction, specifically facing towards the general bathroom, and this elderly lady, whom stood about 5’1ish maybe even 5’2ish, evaded my space and forcefully clutched my basked, and said “I don’t believe I recall ever seeing you hauling baskets”. I responded with “no ma’am, I’m a customer, in dire need of utilizing the bathroom”. She then responded with “okay, well I’ll keep ahold of your basket, to make sure it doesn’t end up lost”. I felt an upmost sense of frustration, due to the fact I’ve witnessed a number of folks freely wheeling their baskets around, the precise location from which I was attempting. Keep in mind, I am BROWN skinned colored. All of whom else, were white folks, strolling around with their baskets, continuing on with their shopping experience. Yet me myself, gets halted… After using the bathroom, the lady nor my basket, was findable … So much for “making sure it wasn’t end up lost”. I NEVER liked the idea of proclaiming my insufferable experiences as “racially motivated”. I’ve always been skeptical whenever one would claim “racism”.. but this exact instance certainly seemed to align with legitimized racial profiling and segregating. This lady seemed in her mid 60s. I’m not sure she’s suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, but it’s certainly not the segregation era anymore, and hasn’t been for a very long while. I’ve served my community for half a decade, and not once ever experienced any sort of discriminatory treatment towards even those with the worst days of their lives. I’ve practiced law long enough to KNOW, that segregation policies were deemed unconstitutional, and therefore, no longer are within our lawful existences. If this store has any real value in their customers, or at least any real sense of ethical standards, there needs to be a reformation in its Anti theft policies. Otherwise this store is very likely to end up with a serious lawsuit on its hands. And it’s not a costly process to reform such an issue. It’s a matter of common decency and respect.
