Early this morning, I visited Home Depot in search of gutter spouts. I’m well aware that this isn’t always the easiest place to get assistance, and today started off as expected. As I entered the store, I saw three younger employees gathered and chatting—which is fine, it’s nice to see camaraderie—but when I asked them where I could find the item, all three simply replied, “Outside,” without offering to help.
I walked outside and approached an older woman for assistance. She said, “Yeah, on the back wall.” I went there, and unfortunately, nothing resembled the sample I had brought. Frustrated, I decided to leave and head to Lowe’s instead.
However, as I was walking out by the flower cashier area, I encountered two employees opening the doors. I asked again—and this time, I was met by Carol.
Carol was an absolute breath of fresh air. She was friendly, welcoming, and had that “old-school” customer service spirit that makes you feel truly valued. She said, “I’ll help you,” and proceeded to walk with me through several sections of the store to help locate the right product. Along the way, she greeted contractors and other customers by name, clearly earning their respect and appreciation.
I shared my earlier experience with her, and she seemed genuinely concerned. I asked if she was a manager—she said no, but that she was standing in as one that day.
I also had the opportunity to meet the District Manager and made sure to share my thoughts with him directly.
Home Depot, if you don’t make Carol a manager, you are truly missing out. Because of her, I will absolutely continue to shop at this location—and with Home Depot in general. One small act of kindness and genuine customer care made all the difference.
Way to go, Carol! You turned my day around.
