The real name of Tennessee before it was changed! The old Cherokee Village of Tanasi is under the water. Great area for sunsets and birds as well.

A memorial to the Cherokee village Tansi . The actual village sets underwater . The name Tanasi which lead to the state name Tennessee.

If one is visiting the Sequoyah Museum, this memorial is definitely worth the drive. It's not too far away, but the memorial marker has enough history information to justify it. No spoilers here, but one can learn a bit more about the state of Tennessee.

We love doing road trips in the National Forest and surrounding areas. Especially in Cherokee.

It is such a shame the original capital is underwater, like so much of history. Just happy to see at least something was erected to mark the area.

This is a hidden gem, once the capital of the Cherokee Nation, Tanasi, where Tennessee got its name!
