I had an extremely unpleasant experience at the ShopRite in Hoboken that I feel compelled to share. I have been using the Smart Cart system for the last four months without any major issues, until my recent visit. This has happened Thursday 11/07/2024 around 9:25-9:30 am. During this trip, I encountered a problem with weighing vine tomatoes on the cart’s built-in scale. Frustrated but hopeful, I decided to complete the weighing process at the self-service checkout instead.
While doing so, a short female employee approached me. I informed her that the scale on the Smart Cart wasn’t working properly. Rather than assisting or addressing the issue, she proceeded to scan every single item in my cart using the cart’s system herself. This, unfortunately, led to duplicate scans for many of my items. When I pointed this out, she responded dismissively and told me that I needed to scan all items at the regular self-service machines. To add insult to injury, she remarked that I should use a regular cart next time, implying that I was at fault and undermining my intelligence.
Her condescending attitude and lack of understanding were frustrating enough, but it was her behavior that crossed the line into what felt like ignorance and discrimination. This encounter left me so upset that I abandoned my cart and left the store altogether. I do not plan to return after such a demeaning experience.
This type of behavior from employees is unacceptable, and it’s disappointing to see such a lack of respect and competence in customer service. ShopRite needs to address how their staff handles these situations to prevent such treatment in the future.
