This is my second time reviewing this vet after a few years, I see nothing has changed. I made an appointment for my dog who was throwing up because they were the ONLY vet in the area with a same-day appointment available. (telling?) After the exam, they gave me an estimate for $1200 for X-rays, fluids and an anti-nausea injection. The price was literally three times what my normal vet would be, so I took my chances and left with just an exam. Two days later, my dog got super sick again in the middle of the night, so I took him to the ER vet, knowing it was going to be very expensive.
To my surprise, the ER vet suggested the exact same treatment, but $475 CHEAPER than San Dimas Pet Clinic. In what world is an ER visit less than a normal vets office?? That is bad practice, and predatory of pet owners who don’t know any better but just want the best for their pets. It’s wrong.
To show that this isn’t “inflation”…about four years ago my last dog had a tumor growing on his stomach and I went to San Dimas Pet Clinic (who at the time was my normal vet) and they told me multiple times over several visits not to worry about it. Then one day they tell me it was a mast cell tumor and he needed surgery right away, that it was an emergency. The estimate was close to $6,000.
I knew that couldn’t be right. I called the rescue where I got my dog and they agreed that was insane, and referred me to a different vet, who did the same surgery for $1,100. That’s a big difference. Not only did they do the surgery, but cared about me and my pet and became partners with me over the following three years of cancer treatment, educating me on the type of cancer, the doctor called me frequently to check in, and worked to find the most cost-effective treatments. Something San Dimas Vet Clinic never even offered. They just said, “this is what it is, here’s the number, take it or leave it.” No compassion, no willingness to work with me, the less I knew the better.
Every time I’ve been in San Dimas pet clinic, I’m paying a premium to see kids who look like they just graduated vet school, and the cost is absolutely criminal. I still can’t believe the ER was so much less for the *exact* same thing.
Avoid this place. They are greedy, and don’t care about you or your pet. I should have learned the first time, but this second time has me pretty furious. Places like this give good small animal vets a bad name.
