Sage Coffee & Books is by far one of the quirkiest bookstores my wife and I have ever browsed. One’s eyes are first blessed with the eclectic exterior of this little residential home near the end of the street. In the yard we were greeted by the friendly black cat, Erie, which we could not pass up the opportunity to give a scratch behind the ears.
The front door opens into a sea of books, both old and new, and true vintage collectors will recognize that petrichor-like smell of lignin that old books release as they age. Lara, the owner, has her own method of organizing the selection, which she will gladly explain as you browse. As the name suggests, I am assuming you can have a coffee during your visit, although we did not sample the offering this time.
My wife and I were visiting the Gulfport area for a family event and only had a few moments to spend. We had flown down earlier, and my wife had cautioned me about falling in love with too many books as we still had to get them back home somehow. Lara overheard our discussion and offered to ship the books to us! I know that was above and beyond, and wasn’t an easy thing to do, so I am giving a heartfelt shout out to her for doing that for us.
So, if you’re in the Gulfport, MS area, love old books, and have a few moments (which I’d recommend you consider extending), stop by Sage Coffee & Books. Have a coffee. Adopt some previously loved books. And give the cat a loving pat on the head for us.
