I have shopped at Richdale Food Shops at Prospect and Broadway many times over the years. The owners have never been particularly friendly, but the store is convenient, so I have continued to go there.
Last night, I went in to buy two bottles of ginger ale. As I approached the counter to pay, the owner accused me of stealing. He claimed he saw me put something into my purse and insisted on going through my bag right there in the store. I was so shocked and humiliated that I didn’t know what to do.
Of course, he found nothing — I had only the two sodas I intended to buy — but he never apologized for wrongly accusing me. I paid and left in tears.
I am an elderly Black woman who lives in this neighborhood and owns a home here. I have shopped at this store many times and have always paid for everything I bought. I can only conclude that I was racially profiled.
No one deserves to be treated with such suspicion and disrespect, especially in a community where they live and shop. I hope the owners will reflect on how their actions affect their customers — and on the harm caused when prejudice is allowed to override basic decency.
