I've been a long-time customer of Nordstrom, and I understand why we don't have one in the SLO area. Though getting a Nordstrom Rack was better than none, I was somewhat disappointed by my recent visit to Nordstrom Rack. The lack of customer service was evident, with staff appearing disengaged and unresponsive to customer needs. Additionally, the store is relatively small compared to typical Nordstrom Rack outlets.
Furthermore, I found the quality of the brands and products to be subpar, leaving me with the impression that the store did not meet the expected standard or that the SLO location could be a Class B store. Some brands in the stores are not even brands they would carry in the regular Nordstrom. The disorganized shelving and uncomfortably narrow aisles detracted from the overall shopping experience. Not to mention the tacky holiday decorations that were installed that were surprising, it's important not to be misled by the small-town feel of SLO, as the area is home to a sophisticated, trendy, and affluent community, including year-round residents, students, and visitors.
Nordstrom Rack had the potential to substantially impact the shopping landscape in the San Luis Obispo area, given the lack of stores of comparable quality in the county. Nonetheless, the store they established appeared to align more closely with retailers like Ross or TJ Maxx rather than maintaining the renowned high-quality standard associated with Nordstrom Rack—unless this is now their intended goal, to compete directly with Ross and TJ Maxx.
