This store is insane.
I came to McKays after finding them on instagram. I messaged asking if they were the same as a bookstore chain I grew up going to, the person on social media gave me the back story which was incredible on its own and we made the decision to go the next day I had off.
We drove an hour and let me tell you as a family who frequently thrifts and goes to restores, McKays takes the cake entirely. Even better than I remember. This store is HUGE. We arrived at 5pm and didn’t leave until past 7pm and to be honest we just gave up because already had so many books!!! They have categories for everything. Mathematics, languages, horror, sci-fi, light hearted mysteries, old school nostalgic books from scholastic, manga and graphic novels, books on cars, books on religion, dvds ranging from Sopranos to SpongeBob to Star Trek to Men In Black to Reba, board games and puzzles for everyone, CDs including artists like Duke Ellington, AC/DC, Tate McRae, Paramore, and vinyls ranging just the same.
Everything here felt quality, it wasn’t like getting books at the thrift store at all. These are clean, taken care of books for the most part, you can’t help when a 10 year old book is cracking. I don’t think we came across one that was even missing a cover. There would be a few instances of mismatched pricing, the book would say $9.99 and they have it for $11, an old sticker from a different store has $3 and they have it for $5, but honestly? Couldn’t care less. Because you can still get insane coffee table books for $8, a full set of books for $20, you can learn the religions of the world for $2, you can get a classic CD for $4 (not scratched to hell like most thrifted ones and it’s actually desirable music). McKays still has the most fair pricing I’ve seen for quality, resale entertainment and overall it is truly just a wonder to be in this store. We were able to get this entire cart (which included a full set of dictionaries) for $120. Most of this we have never really found at thrift stores and at a big store like Barnes and Noble, let’s be real, twilight still isn’t even affordable there, let alone an actual cart full of literature.
Entirely worth the drive we took to get here and I would recommend this to anyone as it is also in an incredible location!! Close to an outlet mall so there really is something for everyone. Our only regret was not getting there earlier.
