I was very excited to try this new place when I read it was going to be pollo asado, as I miss the delicious pollo asado/al carbon places in Mexico. Jose's is open Tuesday-Sunday at 10a. They have repainted the interior and exterior in a bright color scheme, the seating is new looking, and the kitchen looks absolutely spotless from what I could see from the register. The cashier was a very friendly young man who immediately acknowledged me when I walked in about 40 minutes after opening. The menu is very simple and easy to read. They have a varied drink selection to choose from (many are Mexican sodas). Prices for sodas are a little on the expensive side, but makes sense since they're in glass bottles and most likely imported. The dining area is very very small and it was very cold with a beautiful breeze blowing through when I was there, so I opted to get my order to go. There's also outdoor seating at a counter around the perimeter of the building. They have a small parking lot on the 25th Street side of the building, but I've never had a problem getting parking on the surrounding streets. Now, onto the food...
I ordered the 1/2 chicken and 1/2 rib meal. It comes with both chicken and pork ribs, rice, beans, tortillas, an entire grilled yellow onion, 2 red salsas and 2 green salsas. I opted to try the marinated meats today. My food was ready and packaged safely in about 7 minutes. This initially concerned me because I was worried about food temp and taste. When I took the bag, it was piping hot in the best way possible and smelled like absolute mouth watering heaven. I was eager to get home and rip into my meal. The tortillas are hot and delicious, the rice and beans taste homemade, the ribs are not dry and come right off the bone and weren't greasy. The chicken is exactly what pollo asado is...you can taste a bit of the smokey charcoal flavor mixed with the chili spices for the marinade (not spicy, but savory and delicious). The salsas are also good, the red has some serious spice so if spicy isn't your thing tread lightly. The green was not spicy and if mixed with the red salsa, brings the spice level down to a really good level. Pricing was pretty good considering the amount of food and the current inflation situation. The meal I got is labeled for 3-4 people, but depending on your appetite it may be good for less or more people. It was perfect for two starving adults with a food addiction and we had leftovers for dinner. Best $28 I've spent on eating out recently. Can't wait to go back and try the plain and BBQ options at some point. I'm hoping this place sticks around for a long time.
