This morning, while grabbing coffee at Blue Bottle, my toddler did what toddlers do—she saw an open door and ran inside. I walked in right after her, obviously keeping an eye on her, when the employee on duty immediately snapped, “She can’t run in the store.” Fair enough. I responded with a lighthearted, “I wish I could stop her,” with a laugh because, as any parent knows, toddlers aren’t exactly known for taking direction when they are excited about something. Instead of even an ounce of understanding, this guy looks me straight in the face and smugly says, “You can.”
Oh, really? Please, do tell me more about how to parent, retail guy. I’m sure he has a wealth of experience wrangling unpredictable toddlers while trying to exist in the real world. Instead of being polite or understanding, he doubled down on the attitude, making it clear that a small child briefly stepping inside was, apparently, a grave offense.
Everlane, if you’re going to sell an image of laid-back, California-cool minimalism, maybe train your staff to embody some actual warmth and grace instead of hiring people who get off on scolding parents. No one needs a shopping experience that comes with a side of unsolicited parenting advice.
