Driving on I5 when my water pump failed and my car overheated, pulled off the freeway into this gas station and turned off the car to let it cool down a bit and pretty much as soon as I’m parked and looking under the hood the cashier leaves the register to stand in the doorway and give me the stink eye. At this point I had thought I was just too low on oil and decided to run in and check if they had any 5w-20, and they did—a single bottle, cracked open and leaking all over the dirty shelves. Said fine whatever since I needed it and walk up to the register, cashier is giving me the same stink eye whole time and doesn’t say anything beyond telling me the price of the oil. Obviously the oil didn’t fix my water pump and my car wouldn’t start, so decide to call a tow truck—only problem is I live in Irvine and so does my mechanic, and the tow truck was about a 2.5 hour wait. Call my sister to pick me up and drive me ahead to the mechanic since my car has no AC for me to be waiting all that time then go back inside to let the cashier know a tow truck is on the way for my car only to be told that she’ll have it towed herself if it’s left unattended. Explain to her again that I’m only leaving it unattended because a tow truck is already on the way for it and it has no AC, says she doesn’t care and will call somebody to tow it out if she sees it unattended. At that point I tell my sister to turn around and I’m stuck waiting another hour and a half for the tow truck in my broken down car in 85+ degree weather, the cashier regularly stepping out of the store to check that I’m still with my car the whole time. Was also harassed by a homeless man asking me very insistently for money during this whole process, so that was fun. All in all I would say that you could not pay me any amount of money to return to this gas station, if I was out of gas and pushing my car along the road i would walk past this gas station, and to that cashier I truly hope you were just having a “both my parents just passed away” level of terrible day because if not and that’s just how you treat people it’s no wonder gas station cashier is the best job you can manage at your big age—anything higher up requires people skills you do NOT possess.
