A Hidden Gem in the Sierra Foothills!
I usually come out to the Angels Camp/Murphy’s area once or twice a year to visit family, and on my most recent trip from the Bay Area, I was looking for a solid Jiu Jitsu spot to train at whenever I’m in Calaveras. I’m so glad I found Calaveras Jiu Jitsu.
From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by Adam, a respected BJJ Black Belt and one of the owners. He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion to the mats. I attended his Thursday night class (6–7pm), where he taught a focused session on half guard—breaking the technique down in a clear, detailed, and practical way. Afterward, I got to roll with a few of his students—let me tell you, they are built different out here!
I also came back for their 11am Open Mat on Saturday, where I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie, the co-owner and also a seasoned BJJ Black Belt. She was just as welcoming and clearly plays a huge role in building the strong, inclusive community that this gym has.
This place checks all the boxes: clean mats, high-level instruction, good vibes, and tough but respectful training partners. I’ll definitely be back every time I’m in town. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the area or looking for a new home gym in Calaveras County!
