I recently had the opportunity to work with Clay Marshall, a sales representative at Bob Rohrman Toyota in Lafayette IN. I wanted to “downsize”, at least in terms of MPG, trading my big, gas guzzling pickup on a used but well proven Toyota hybrid that would be easier on me at the gas pump. I inquired about a Prius v they had and Clay fielded my call. We talked or texted each day or two, with Clay investing his time answering my questions thoroughly and professionally, over the last couple of weeks. Clay always got me the answers that I needed, and, of course, always took the opportunity to persuade and motivate me closer to a sale…after all, that’s what he’s supposed to do. Though I’ve not met him face to face, we ended up establishing a good business rapport. But as it turned out, a couple days before I was intending to make the 3 hour trip up to Lafayette, I also took the opportunity to satisfy my curiosity about a couple of other cars. As luck would have it, I ended up finding a used Toyota luxury sedan that was a much better fit for my 73 year old body….and the deal was right as well. But I needed to call Clay and let him know personally what I had decided and why. So we had a nice talk on the phone and Clay was a real pro… he graciously congratulated me on finding the right Toyota at the right deal for me, and asked for my business or referral in the future, to which I heartily agreed. Even though my experience with Bob Rohrman Toyota didn’t culminate in the expected sale, I found a great sales rep that still did a great job!There’s an old axiom that I learned in my years in sales… “ The Rule of 400”. Everyone knows at least 400 people that they network with… if you have a good, positive, interaction, they will pass that on to their 400 friends, and so on…. Conversely, if you have a bad or terrible experience, well, that gets passed along too!Thank you Clay, … I’ll be passing along my great experience with you and Bob Rohrman Toyota to at least 400 of my friends!
