I’d like to highlight my recent experience with a cashier, “Sawrah” (apologies if I’ve misspelled the name), who demonstrated a stunning example of poor customer service. Here’s the backstory: I purchased a beautiful green vase and noticed I was charged $18.99, which was $10 more than the price I believed was on the tag. When I brought this up, Sawrah escorted me to the back of the store to verify the price.
After consulting with the floor associate Geno and the manager Naz, it was confirmed that the vase’s price was $18.99. While Geno and Naz deliberated whether to honor the $8.99 price or charge the original $18.99, Sawrah decided to interject, insisting, “No, sell it to him for $18.99.” Geno thoughtfully argued (paraphrased) that the vase should be sold for $8.99, given that prices would increase the following day, but Sawrah remained firm, and Naz ultimately sided with her.
To make matters worse, Sawrah sarcastically suggested I return the next day for the 50% off sale. I found her behavior both unprofessional and insulting. Enforcing a higher price, despite not being the manager, and then recommending I come back tomorrow for a sale felt dismissive and entirely unnecessary. I wasn’t particularly upset about the price itself—$18.99 for a thrift store vase simply wasn’t worth it to me—but the auction-like treatment during what was supposed to be a moment of self-care was disappointing.
With that said, I sincerely hope Sawrah finds a role better suited to her assertive nature, perhaps as a fashion merchandiser rather than a cashier.
On a positive note, I’d like to commend Geno for being a true sales floor superhero. I genuinely appreciated your advocacy and willingness to help. Naz, while the final decision leaned toward Sawrah’s suggestion, I also want to acknowledge your efforts to assist me. Thank you both for your professionalism.
