I have been going to this barber shop for 20 years. All my kids and many of our neighbors and friends also go here. But to be clear, there is nothing special about this shop as it is just a basic shop with multiple stations and a short to no wait most days. What made it special and kept us coming back were the people cutting hair. In particular Michell Do who has worked here for 22 years. She is a part of our family and community and our families have grown up together. Anyone could cut my hair and do an acceptable job, but nobody cares like she does.
Last week the new owner fired her with no warning, putting profit over people. The reasons are not clear but whatever happened could not be that bad considering she was immediately hired across the street and is now cutting hair at Master Cuts. As a long time and loyal customer of Michelle, I am very disappointed to see such a narrow perspective from a new owner that clearly does not understand the community where his store is located. Valuing long serving and dedicate employees is a top priority for any business. But the actions of the owner show that a 22 year employee meant very little to his business, and as such, he is telling her loyal customers that we are not that important to his business either.
Michelle deserves better and he should feel the impact of his decision. I have already gone across the street to support Michelle. Ironically, I paid the same price as I did at Ohana. I can’t say I will never return to Ohana, but I can say I will never return if Michelle is not there. And I will do all I can to make sure our FV community sends a message to this clueless owner that people and relationships matter most.
