Our gutters had leaked for years. Multiple companies came out, fixed a few gaps where they leaked, one company finally replaced the gutters, but they still leaked. Everyone who came out said we needed a new roof, which we knew, but none mentioned that that was the reason our gutters leaked.
In October, 2024, I called a local roofing company that had good reviews. A young man came out and told us that we definitely needed a new roof and that it was pushing on the gutters, causing the leaks. He gave us a quote of over $20K for new sheeting, shingles and labor.
I decided to ask friends for recommendations. One mentioned Johnson Restoration, so I called them. Tom from Johnson came out within 24 hours. He went up on the roof like the first roofer did, and told us the same thing, that we definitely needed a new roof and that it was causing the gutters to leak. But he also mentioned that he found storm damage. He explained that the ways some of the shingles were bent and loosened indicated wind damage from a storm. He also mentioned that the sheeting was not up to code.
Unlike the first roofer, Tom asked who our insurance company was and said that he would work with them on any claims. We were very happy to hear that. He also told us that we qualified for the company's "Friends and Family" discount since we were recommended to them by a former customer whose son had grown up with Andy, the owner. It was a significant savings
We called our insurance company to file the claim. When their adjuster came out, Tom met him here. We hired Johnson that day and paid a $1K deposit. Tom turned his photos and estimate in to our insurance company, and within a week we received payment for over half of the total price. Tom came out again and took some pictures of the sheeting, sent them to our insurance company, and we received another insurance payment of 30% of the remaining balance.
We were on the list of residential jobs. Tom explained that if they didn't get to us before the winter weather hit, it could be spring until they started our job. In the meantime, he also checked for interior and exterior water damage, found none, so we were fine with waiting.
In February, 2025, the roofing crew got the job done in one day. They were a great crew--very professional and nice. They did a beautiful job. They showed up at sunrise and got to work. I ran an early afternoon errand and when I got home the job was complete. The crew was gone, the roof looked great, and there was no mess! I couldn't believe it! You wouldn't have known there had been an entire roof replaced that day. My husband checked out how the sheeting looked from inside the attic. He said it was perfect.
Tom and the insurance agent had both told us that insurance may pay the balance once they crew started tearing off the old roof and found any more damage. Within a few days our insurance company, Amica, paid the balance.
So we had a hassle-free, excellent experience with Johnson! Not only was the workmanship great, but working with our insurance was amazing. When Tom asked who our insurance company was, he said he was glad to hear it was Amica because they were easy to work with.
I did contact the first roofer who came out to let him know that we weren't going with them. I told him about the storm damage, code violations, and willingness to work with insurance that he said nothing about. He said he'd come back and do all that, but I told him that we also got the Friends and Family discount, so no thanks. He was a nice young guy but with only three years experience.
