The Balearía ferry is a great way to travel from Fort Lauderdale FL to a couple of areas of the Bahamas - Bimini and Grand Bahamas. The prices are a bit high (225$ a person after all the fees) m, considering you can fly there for an additional 100$. Be prepared for one of the longest days of your life. They recommend you arrive at the port between 6:15-6:45AM on your departure date. It’s a lot of “hurry up and wait,” and the workers epitomize the island time ethos. If you show up before 7AM you won’t have to wait on lines but you’ll have to sit until 9AM when they board the ship. Make sure you have your ferry tickets printed in advance and you must have your passport to make the trip. The ferry ride is comfortable and clean but the island time approach leaves long lines on the ship’s two food and drink service facilities. Plan on a half hour to 40 minute wait for a cup of coffee and a muffin. If you pay an extra 60$ a person on your ticket you can get table service and the option to cut the lines during boarding and disembarking. In retrospect, that would have been worth spending, which brings me back to this being one of the longest days of my life. You’re going to get to Bimini after about 2 hours, but you’ll lose about 30-45 minutes waiting to disembark. You can spend about 6-7 hours on Bimini island before getting into the cattle corral experience to get back on the boat. By the way, Bimini beach is beautiful, the Hilton Casino and Hotel are alright, and the rest of Bimini island isn’t very much to see. Plan on waiting about 60-90 minutes to get back on the ferry. The staff will repeatedly tell you get ready, gather to board the ship and then yell at everyone for getting together to board the ship. This goes back to the island time ethos. When you ask them where the tram is to ride you back to the ferry, they’ll say “what’s the rush, mon?” Make sure you bring all the patience you can muster. When getting back on the ship you’ll notice that they oversell the seating capacity, so some people will be standing for the ride back to FL. When you finally return to Ft Lauderdale around 11pm, prepare to be told to gather and then yelled at to wait and be asked why you’ve gathered to disembark… and so on, repeating the cycle. The last long slow line you’ll need to endure is the customs line. A customs agent speaks with everyone who gets off the ship. Note that some rude people will cut the lines and cause some mayhem in that final human cattle corral experience. Not paying the extra money for faster, better service was my only regret. The seats on the ferry are comfortable and the outdoor ship decks provide a great ocean view. As long as you’re prepared for all the waiting, it’s a good experience.

If I could give Balearia Caribbean zero stars, I would. This ferry company is nothing short of a nightmare. They took my money and then canceled my ticket, blaming their own system for the problem. When I asked to speak with a manager to resolve the issue, I was met with the shocking response that there is no management to speak with. They offered to send an email to reinstate my ticket, but said it would take 48 hours to respond. No urgency or concern for the fact that they had already taken my money and canceled my trip. I requested to be connected to customer service over the phone—denied. They told me they only accept emails. Fast forward three days later, I finally get an email saying my ticket was reinstated. However, they asked me to send my passport information again (for the third time), assuring me I could just respond to the email. The next day, I received an email saying I had responded to an unmonitored address and they never received my documents. Unbelievable! I called again to provide the same information for the fourth time and, yet again, asked to speak with a manager to outline this entire infuriating process. I was told by the representative, Leidy, that there is no management, and they would not send an email or request for a call back from anyone. My only options were to give them the information (again) and show up on the scheduled date, or I could just refund my ticket. This company’s customer service is appalling. Their complete lack of responsibility, the repeated system errors, and refusal to connect me to management or offer any real solution was beyond frustrating. And the worst part? They are the only ferry option to the Bahamas, so they have zero incentive to treat their customers with respect. If you can find any other way to get to the Bahamas, do yourself a favor and avoid Balleria Caribbean at all costs. This is, without question, the most disorganized, unprofessional, and downright terrible company I have ever dealt with. What a joke of an organization!
