GO AT YOUR OWN RISK! My hair was ruined at Aveda. Appointment date: Sept 23, 2024.
The goal: cutting off split ends and an all-over color to get back to something natural. We agreed on around 2 inches.
I’d seen the good reviews, I knew that there’s always a risk when it comes to students - but I figured I wasn’t asking for anything too crazy. A trim, a darker color. Instead I wound up with 5+ inches hacked off, hair that was almost box dye black, splotchy color, and layers with obvious holes in them.
I wish I could say that it’s just hair, but I cried for DAYS. I’d talked to my stylist about how I’d lost a lot of hair due to grief and was trying to be careful while growing out/taking care of what was left. I had a whole conversation with her *and* the instructor about my natural color that I was aiming for, and how we knew for a fact that my natural hair wasn’t black and how black would be too dark - and yet I wound up with hair that looked so dark and weirdly harsh that it didn’t look like real hair anymore.
Aveda gave me two options after I called in to complain: get a second appointment and have another student try to fix it, or get a refund but be banned from using Aveda services again.
If this had been a student with zero oversight, I might have been willing to give Aveda another shot. What I can’t fathom is how an INSTRUCTOR signed off of this cut, these layers, this coloring, and even deemed it well-done in person. I wound up opting to take the refund and have a completely different salon salvage what they could, which meant losing even more length and processing my hair even more. I imagine it’ll take at least a year and a half to get my length back, and 3-4 years to fully grow out the hair that was colored.
If you do still decide to go here for services, don’t be afraid to listen to your spidey senses and leave if you feel like something is off. I decided to trust the instructors here to keep an eye on their students, and every time I look in the mirror I’m reminded that I was wrong.
