Telefèric Barcelona brings all the joys of visiting Spain without the dangers of being gored by a bull or oppressive colonialism. There's much to recommend here, but perhaps the greatest standout is the cocktail menu. Tequila runs the show here, but they also offer a wide range of fruity concoctions (jungle scotch is highly recommended), expertly crafted presentations (la flaca is sickly sweet but comes topped with a fun smoke filled bubble), and unique takes on classics (Bryan's Legacy adds a smokey mystique to an old fashioned).
The tapas range from some of the best food I've had in Los Angeles, to things I will certainly never order again. Starting with the highlights, the patatas bravas are undoubtedly the crispiest yet lightest morsels of potato I've ever had, and are topped with an exquisite brava sauce containing the perfect ratio of smokey paprika and tomato. The fish in the tacquitos de tuna & avocado is incredibly fresh, and wrapped in a delectable puffy shell that melts in your mouth. This was unfortunately contrasted with the Dragonballs, which are some of the worst things I've ever put in my mouth.
I have mixed feelings about the empanadas. As someone whose diet is 15% empanadas, pupusas, and arepas, I really REALLY wanted to love the empanadas here, but I just couldn't. The dough is crispy and fresh, but they are filled with a relatively bland curried chicken that would fit better in an Indian restaurant and makes me wonder if the chef who made them was confused about the type of cuisine they were supposed to be making. This was surprising given the popularity of the empanadas, until I realized they are a prototypical example of group think. Much like how in Inventing Anna everyone buys into the idea that Anna is wealthy and perpetuates this false notion because they are afraid to question it, I've concluded that the empanadas at Telefèric simply aren't great but people keep ordering them because they believe they are supposed to like them. We must stand strong in the face of social pressures and stop ordering these empanadas.
But then came the brussels sprouts, which were cooked to literal perfection and dressed in a delightful citrus glaze that I could not get enough of, and the sins of the Dragonballs and empanadas were forgiven.
Overall, a fantastic dining experience with some truly outstanding dishes if you order well. Five stars!
