My girlfriend and I walked in, and the first thing I noticed was the lone employee working the shift. There was a couple ahead of us, ordering sandwiches with every conceivable topping, making overly picky demands which Joe accommodated with ease. Quite frankly, I’m not the biggest fan of Subway, but the sandwiches he was crafting actually looked delicious. I watched as he assembled the sandwiches with precision and attention to detail. His demeanor never wavered, despite the demands of the couple ahead of us. When he finished their food, he thanked them in a way that felt genuine, something that is rare of employees making these low wages. When my girlfriend and I were on deck, we showed him our coupon, asking if there were any exceptions, and he informed us there were none. I don’t know how to describe it, but his attention to detail while making the sandwiches, from toasting the bread, to slicing the vegetables down the middle before he folded it impressed me. No excessive chit chat, nothing forced. He genuinely seemed to care about what was doing, a real breath of fresh air in today’s day and age. I cannot give Joe enough praise, and firmly believe that he deserves a raise.
