We purchased 5 hens. We were clear we wanted laying hens. Meaning still laying. I’m giving three out of five stars because of the following.
The owner is very nice, communication good, scheduling for a pick up good. However, of the 5 hens we purchased only one (1) is laying. She is a very sweet chicken and we love her to pieces. She is a Barred Rock, and she is just everything. Of the others we were given 2 Brahma, and 2 Dark Cochin. Both breeds were molting. When molting hens don’t lay, their system is all in with the molting and recovery process. When a chicken is done molting, they should lay. So here’s the issues. All 4 birds were molting, when molting stopped, no eggs. It’s been months no eggs. They have proper nutrition, treats, water, space, activities and more. The Brahmas are happy birds. As for the Cochins, they ended up being rehomed. Not just because they were not laying , but because they were very mean. These birds are known for a soft, gentile, docile demeanor, however that was not the case for these two. They terrorized the coop. It was beyond a pecking order, they were out to kill. One of the Brahmas got very injured, and was separated, and treated, and recovered. By then the Cochins were gone/rehomed.
We paid $40 a chicken. 4 of them we feel as though we were taken. We had a chicken expert come look at the Brahmas, in the end it was just not a molting issue, a change of environment, but the fact that the Brahmas are seniors, and done laying. Since we are compassionate, we have kept the Brahmas. We figured they lived their life laying, supply eggs for people, and they do NOT deserve to be kicked to the curb for non-production. They deserve to be loved, to rest and to enjoy a peaceful retirement as the seniors they are. The three remaining chickens from Steelman acres are very sweet girls.
Edit……. Everything the owner below stated, we do and continue to do. Our birds are very well taken care of, and properly taken care of.
