I went twice to this restaurant before writing a review. I didn’t plan it that way, but our friends wanted to try the restaurant just days after we went there the first time. I discovered Smoke N Ash after reading an article about the local restaurants included in the Michelin Guide. It was only 15 minutes away, an easy drive. The others in the Michelin Guide were much further in Dallas and more expensive. Customers place their orders and pay at the front counter. We were the only customers at the front counter on our first visit. On the second visit, there was a line of ten people. Once you pay for your order, they give you a number to put on the table of your choice. Your orders will be brought to you in about 15 minutes. I don’t usually comment on the background music, but I liked what I heard. It was old 1960s songs in a smooth jazz style, some of which were seasonal Christmas songs. It was beautiful and relaxing. The first time we went, we ordered a simple Tex-Ethiopian Awaze meat platter: one was chicken and the other was ribs. Awaze is a spicy Ethiopian sauce. They came with Ethiopian bread (a thick crepe) and vegetable stew. On the second visit, we ordered the Tex-Ethiopian Platter for Two. Our friends ordered Beef Tibs with Fries and Sliced Brisket. The awaze is a bit spicy. It’s made of chili pepper, garlic, ginger, and other spices. But it’s not as hot as Indian or Thai curry. It doesn’t make you sweat. This was my first experience of awaze. I like it. It has more flavor than normal Texas barbeque sauce. And it complements meat very well. All the different meats were tender and flavorful. For me, the meat was better than any other local barbeque I’ve tried. That says a lot because Texas has a lot of good barbeques. We didn’t order potato salad or green beans, but the fried okra and French fries were perfect. Next time, we’ll try more of the Ethiopian side dishes. And their desserts too. I think everyone should taste the food here. It’s excellent. We planned on taking home some leftovers, but we finished everything we ordered. I highly recommend it.
