Purgatory's Pub occupies a part of Bettendorf I've been trying to get to know better over the last few weeks. Occupying an unassuming building along State Street in the downtown area, I've driven by it day and night, often times on my way back from the Freight House Farmer's Market. After a meal and drink at the nearby Main Event, I decided I wanted to stay out for a little while longer tonight - Purgatory's seemed like the place to continue on to!
The building occupied by Purgatory's Pub looks just slightly out of place in this area. Consisting mostly of lightly worn reddish brick, the place looks like it was once a small pub among a row of similar looking pubs/buildings in the area, but somehow only it remains. Regardless of it sticking out a little, I like it - it looks a little more aged and worn with character in stark contrast to the Waterfront Convention Center across the street or the Ascentra Credit Union office immediately west.
The interior continues these appearances and affectations. The floors consist of a newish two foot square laminate tile, the walls are mostly painted wood paneling of some type, and the ceiling consists mostly of two by four foot drop ceiling tiles. There's really no formal lighting to speak of - the space is illuminated by a combination of the neon beer signs on the walls, the TVs above the bar area, and the backlighting behind the liquor bottles. It's a good aesthetic overall - I found it very relaxing on the eyes.
I only got one drink during my visit at Purgatory's - a Hendricks and Tonic. I'd never had Hendricks Gin before this, but I'd definitely have this particular Gin and Tonic again. It was smooth and a little sweet - exactly what I want in a good G&T. I might have to try a Hendricks martini at some point, just to see what it is like.
I could see coming back here many times in the future with friends. There's ample seating in the room next to the bar, which contains more TVs and a pool table, as well. Thanks for the great drink and atmosphere, Purgatory's!
