My wife and I ate here for our anniversary tonight as a special dinner out. Despite the size of the San Antonio area, truly unique local restaurants with good menus and settings are difficult to find among the usual chain fare. I had been to Mako's once for a farewell luncheon shortly after they opened years ago. It was very early on, but I remember the food being great and the owners interacting with us. Been meaning to come back for some time now, but we live north of 1604, so it's a bit of a haul to come back over to the east side. It was worth it for us to do so tonight.
In a nutshell, Mako's really checks all the boxes for a place you want to return to: Friendly greeting at the door, outstanding food, neat, modernist architecture venue put together with care and thought that reflects many personal touches, very good service, temperature just right and not freezing like most restaurants are all the time (but not too warm, either), and very clean throughout, to include the restrooms.
It did take a little while to get our main dishes, even though there were not many customers early on a Tuesday evening, but when you look at the care put into the preparation and presentation, then taste the results, it is totally worth it. I'm guessing staffing is kept at a minimum on the slower nights, which is understandable.
We shared an appetizer of the Deep Fried Brussels to start off. As Brussel sprouts have become hugely popular in many restaurants, we've had some truly excellent variations that are all good. The Mako's version is unique to anything we've had and are amongst the best we've ever tasted. From their menu description they have a golden raisin hot sauce, garlic chips, toasted sesame seeds and house ricotta. I'd go back just for this.
My entree was the Citrus Marinated Grilled Half Chicken, all pretty much already off the bone and beautifully laid-out. The taste was superb.
My wife had the Harissa Brown Butter Glazed Pork Shoulder. It tasted fantastic as well.
Based on what I've seen, Mako's changes up its menu periodically, offering seasonal dishes, so different dishes will appear as they do so. I like that.
Bottom line: Nice job by Team Mako's. For us, this was an outstanding experience and we will be back. Wish we could afford to come back a LOT more often, but alas, still have to save for that retirement retirement in a few short years. LOL That said, we'll be back sooner than later with our grown kids/spouses when visiting, and will encourage others to try Mako's.
