I looked up dinner places, I looked up restaurants…I found nothing that sounded good to eat after landing in Charlotte. I looked up James Beard nominees and Leah & Louise came up. I trust the Beard, and it was the perfect spot for me on my solo dining experience before heading to the hotel. The hostess and the lady behind the bar were REALLY nice and so helpful with recommendations. I ended up with the House Salad, Oxtail and Grits, and It’s Like Buttah. The salad was really light with lots of flavor. For my own taste, I felt that the roasted apple vinaigrette was a little tart (I’m a sweeter and lighter dressing person) and it needed something sweet in it, and then realized the salad was missing the golden raisins! It was listed in the description on the menu, but I couldn’t find any in the salad. The pickled squash was different in a great way! I loved the shaved ingredients. It was a really great salad, and I will certainly order it again. The oxtail and grits was oh-my-goodness, can’t-wait-to-have-more perfect. It was not heavy, and it was a different take on the dish. The ox tail meat was shredded, and the grits were made into mini gnocchi-like dumplings. I wish there were more of these to go around, but it was actually the perfect amount for the dish. The base was a mix of black eyed peas and maybe lentils…? It was a varied mix of North and South Carolina legumes. I LOVED this dish! For dessert, I think it would be really good for some, but it wasn’t my favorite. To me it had an upscale PB&J taste, and I lean towards the crème brûlée purist side to where the expectancy of flavor altered my enjoyment of it. If you’re adventurous on the ingredients, I would definitely try it! The chef put together some cool ingredients and I think did a fantastic job…it just wasn’t my favorite. All in all, so happy to have found this gem! Location was cool, too.
