Today's new restaurant choice was KEBAB & KEBAB (401 MALL BLVD). They are no longer in soft opening but do not seem to have a FB location mark. It's the Persian/Iranian restaurant in the old Taste of India spot near Oglethorpe Mall. They have really brightened the dining room (see photo). It used to be so dark when it was Taste of India. It's now full light during the day. I love sitting down to a white linen table with cloth napkins but having the choice to come dressed casually. It's nice to see they kept Taste of India's beautiful brass elephant doorknob.
I have gotten spoiled with larger Persian menus in ATL. But the meat and rice quality is better than the kebab spot I ate at last week in Pooler. If you live outside of the Southside you want to drive into town to try this new spot.
The meal began with complimentary Persian bread (think thin Arabic pita versus Greek). This had a plate of radishes, herbs, feta, olives, and walnuts. I had a Doogh yogurt drink with herbs. The Shirazi Salad served to me didn't have the ratio of tomatoes and onions I am used to. The ingredient order was cucumbers, onions, and then lastly a bit of tomato. But the lemon juice wss plentiful and it was a really delightful salad. I had one of the entrees that is not a kebab. I had Chelo Mahichle - slow braised lamb shank with garlic but it's in sauce. And my rice didn't have dill per the menu. I had saffron rice. The sauce was quite good and the lamb was fork tender.
For dinner I ordered kebabs to go but took a quick nibble of both the Joheh (chicken marinated with onion, lemon juice, and Persian saffron) as well as the Kobideh (grilled ground beef with Persian saffron and herbs). A kebab dinner of two kebabs comes with saffron rice, two grilled plum tomatoes, raw onion, herbs, a dry dipping side of sumac spice and a wet dipping sauce that is house made that had quite the kick.
The online menu does not list desserts but they keep rotating desserts of the listed available on the printed menu. The printed menu is larger than the online menu.
They are closed on Sundays which is when SC and I normally grab lunch out so I added this stop to my Staycation list of eats. He has bemoaned the loss of the Southside having the Shwarma spot and liked his dinner quite a bit.
They are still building the private party room that can seat 40 people with reservations but the area is closed off so you don't the work in progress.
I had great service from Kate who despite not being Persian had a fantastic grasp of the menu. She says they are getting support from the Persian/Iranian community. I had seen a post online that this is a Afghani owned restaurant. She says the ownership is Persian/Iranian and the menu is Persian/Iranian. However, there are Afghani women who are sometimes Back of House (kitchen).
Another yummy local business we can support!
