Our savior during the pandemic!
I live in the neighborhood and walking distance from Hillstone. When the ban on indoor seating went into effect, there were not many places we could safely and comfortably sit outside and enjoy good food or drinks. Hillstone was one of the few exceptions! They not only offered delicious food to go but also offered safely distanced outside seating where one could seat in open air without worrying about the "what ifs"! They also had their system all figured out from the start; safe and comfortable seating, safe distancing, proper sanitization of the tables, hand sanitizers for clients, great service and good food and drinks. The staff were on top of their game and the manager was always, always, around making sure all is going well.
A week or so ago, San Francisco restaurants were allowed to open indoor seating with limited capacity. Since then Hillstone has eliminated their makeshift outside seating area that was to the left of the entrance, but still offers their yard by the Embarcadero and the waiting area near the fireplace for outside seating options.
Since the pandemic, the menu has been somewhat modified and, I think, shortened, but I have enjoyed every item I have tried! The following have become favorites of mine:
- Macho Salad
- Pan-Seared Ahi Tuna
- Thai Noodle Salad
- Pan-Roasted Salmon
- Rotisserie Chicken
- Barbecue Pork Ribs
- USDA Prime Center-Cut Filer
Often when we get there (without reservation) there is a waiting list, so we wait or if possible sit outside in the area near the fireplace and order drinks. When one of the two or three tables in the waiting are is available , we order Grilled Artichoke or Spinach & Artichoke Dip for starters (both delicious).
They offer three beers on tap, Reissdorf Kölsch, Lagunitas IPA and Anchor Steam Pale Ale. Kölsch is my hands down favorite! Their Vodka Martini and Margarita are cocktails of my choice, but they do offer a number of other exotic and classic choices.
