Grand Pa's Kitchen is a Chinese-Cambodian noodle shop, also a grill and bar, very interesting.
I had tried their noodles before, below average in both quality and quantity. End of 2024, between Dec 13 to 31 they have special customers' appreciation sales, menu shows 10 special dishes for $9.99, but at check out receipt shows $15.99 less $5 discount, so $10.99 each.
This place is in a fairly busy strip mall on Brookhurst but parking for lunch on this day was easy. It's nice, clean, bright, smelling fine. Tables and chairs are modern, nice, clean.
We were quickly seated. The host was a silent, grumpy-looking guy in his 40's. He quickly threw 2 menus on our table without saying a word. They definitely need more welcoming wait staff.
They have a huge menu of noodles, rice, steaks, seafood with beers and wines. The 10 special-discount dishes are in the regular menu, noodles, and rice dishes. Since it's a Chinese Cambodian place, I had to try their Mi Kho Nam Vang, also a seafood noodle soup.
Noodle and soup are large portions, served in large aluminum bowls. The soup is pork bone, nice, clear, lean, very tasty without evidence of excess sugar, MSG or spices, probably the tastiest soup I've had in SoCal. Noodle is chewy, crunchy with lots of proteins, 2 large shrimps, BBQ pork, liver, heart ect. typical of Cambodian noodle, very tasty but the creamy soy sauce was saltier than I liked.
Unlike other noodle shops in Little Saigon, they did not load the noodle with fried pork fat, which tastes good but is very unhealthy. I would avoid any shop adding fried pork fat to noodle.
A girl at the next table ordered the fried chicken noodle bowl special with a huge crispy fried chicken leg.
Overall their noodles are delicious and healthy in large portions, fairly good deals $10.99, not so good at $15.99 regular price.
The young cashier was smiling pleasantly. I paid with my Amex card, adding a generous tip for their good food. Will be back to try their other dishes, hopefully without the silent host.
I am fairly thick-skinned with rude workers in Viet restaurants, shops and markets, but I was annoyed by the host's cold and silent approach and his rude gesture of throwing menus on our table, like we were not welcomed. Other clients may be offended.
They need a host who will greet clients in friendly, welcoming ways. This problem may have been the main cause of this place's unpopularity in past years.
Many shops in Little Saigon hang big banners, $7.99 for pho, bun, noodle and other dishes.
