Diamond S is a cultural anomaly in Bay City, and the meaning behind the S may surprise you.
The S can stand for Service, which was exceptional. There's no denying that the service here was really good. Annie is a wonderful person, she answered all of our questions in a kind and thoughtful manner, so much so that she left a lasting impression on both me and my partner.
The S, unfortunately, doesn't stand for Scrumptious. My chicken fried steak was unremarkable in every way, the green beans were bland. My partner's steak fingers looked and tasted like petrified t*rds. We both enjoyed the mash potatoes and gravy, though! Later on we tried a cinnamon roll and it was probably the worst cinnamon roll we ever had; instead of a soft and chewy texture, it had this cornbread profile reminiscent of stale bread.
The S might have one final interpretation, though. From what I observed during my time there, the citizens of Bay City seem to really value this diner. The place was packed, just full of people, especially the elderly. Diamond S seems to bring a lot of family-oriented, small town comfort in its existence, it's withstood the test of time to deliver an unexplainable warmth. It's a Spirited family diner.
If you lived in this city all your life, maybe you'll love this little diner. If you're a stranger from out of town like myself (or a foodie), you may find yourself disappointed in the food while trying to resist the rustic charm that may permeate throughout.
