I called to place a pick up order about 530pm on a Friday. Sherry was who answered the phone, placed me on hold. We were already on route to the restaurant since we were coming from Rydal. I was on hold for almost 20 minutes before I hung up. All I could hear in the background was a lot of commotion like they were busy. Waited a few minutes and called back, call wouldn't go through because their line was busy. Which was most likely the phone on the counter to keep me on hold. I kept trying the rest of the drive there, same thing. So at this point I can say they did forget someone was on the phone wanting to give their business money.
Got there and it was not that busy at all. So makes me wonder why they couldn't take my order. I wanted to go over to the Kebab delite nearby at this point, but my husband wanted to give this new place a chance. So we got in the drive thru. Couldn't dine in, we had our dogs with us. Place the order at the menu/intercom area. Quite a few items we wanted were not available. Drive thru line moves incredibly slow. So just a heads up, if you want take out. Might want to attempt calling it in and going inside for pickup so you don't have to wait a long time in the drive thru.
Ordered the catfish dinner with collards and okra and the chicken/dressing with macaroni/cheese and mashed potatoes. Desserts of banana pudding and chocolate cake. Total was $40.91
Seems a bit high for a southern country style place compared to a few other places in town.
Got our order and pulled to the side to verify everything was there. Upon first glance portions are kind of smaller. I did notice the banana pudding was very runny. Quite disappointed in that. The chocolate cake, I was expecting a normal slice of cake. But it was more of a pound cake loaf style slice, so it was a bit small. For $3.99 per dessert I was expecting a bit more for the money.
The mashed potatoes taste identical to the instant ones made by Betty Crocker and Idahoan, literally identical to the instant garlic mashed potatoes.
The macaroni and cheese was good though, tasted homemade. Was not greasy as I have seen other people on Google and Yelp say.
My cornbread was in rough shape. Very very crumbly, I know I know, it's cornbread. But it was more crumbly and very dried out than the usual cornbread.
The chicken and dressing wasn't bad. It was moist and had a decent taste. It could use some more seasoning.
The catfish dinner with collards and okra was my husbands meal so this was his opinion on it.....
The fried okra was chewy, flavor wise it tasted good.
Collards were just alright. They aren't too salty.
The catfish wasn't pleasant. Very fishy tasting. If you have had good catfish, you know what good flaky catfish is. Unfortunately this was not it.
I do hate that we did not have the best experience with Country Gold. We had been looking forward to trying them for awhile now after hearing some good things. This was a miss for us from start to finish.
