Catharpin Park has been a “project” since we moved here in 2020….
The amenities are ok, they could be better but could be worse.
There are 5 baseball fields that are laid out to utilize the space well, but spectators have to be on high alert for foul Balls from all directions! Maybe in the next few projects, netting will be added?!?
There are batting cages at the outfield of the fields which is nice!
There are also lights at the baseball fields, which is rare & 100% great for hours of baseball!
Since the landline of trip hazards have been repaired getting to the baseball fields it’s much nicer! The stories (from able body kids) told when they finally repaired the sidewalk, of that “big yellow thing” everyone fell over or the huge gravel hole that was like quicksand will not be missed by anyone! Just walking on a sidewalk herding kids, pulling a wagon is more than enough excitement for me!
The batting cages do not have an accessible route, there are big holes from poor drainage, going up a big hill to get to the cages & there have been a few kids trip in the hole & fall down the hill leaving the cages going to the sidewalk.
It would be nice if the batting cages & fields were turf and ADA compliant. I know there are many folks that would love to play competitive adaptive sports and Catharpin would be a great place for such an amazing opportunity for our disabled children, adults and wounded warriors!
The grass soccer fields are nice & some have lights. There is asphalt walkways to get to the soccer ⚽️ fields and a nice walking area.
The asphalt walkways do have some pretty long, steep hills which is nice for the glutes but not helpful for mobility impaired.
The hill from the parking lot to the playground is very steep and exceeds the slop requirement for ADA.
The playground 🛝 has some nice play components. Unfortunately, it has mulch which is hard with a walker and not possible with a wheelchair ♿️. There are also some edges that have drops that exceed 1/4-1/2”. There are a few random curbs which I assume are to keep the mulch in. However since the mulch has such a thin layer & the curbs are concrete going to grass I’ve seen plenty of able body kids trip over them and fall on their face going into the grass or into the playground. A fence around the playground as a notification of the curb would help the situation and also be nice containment for children who are “runners”.
Parking 🅿️ has been a 💩showcase for years!! It used to be gravel, then a section was paved but not all of it. Then they paved almost all of the parking. There’s still a tiny section not paved. I don’t know why 🤷♀️
They installed lights 💡 in the parking lot but they didn’t work for months. The lights started working the end of the Fall 2024 soccer ⚽️ season after baseball ⚾️ season was over. When they turned on the parking lot lights they finally paved from the baseball sidewalk to the parking lot. Which was dirt for years.
PWCP FINALLY installed more ADA parking 🅿️ ♿️ when they did the last paving. Until then there were 4 spots for the baseball fields and the same for soccer. Practice nights they are not full, only a couple of spots are used. Game days ALL of the ♿️🅿️ accessible spots are full which means they were much needed.
To clarify by accessible I mean spots with the wheelchair logo and a loading/unloading striped aisle are there. Some but not all of the accessible parking spaces have accessible routes to a primary function of the park.
There is a pedestrian crossing area between the soccer fields - playground and baseball fields however the lights do not work there, it is not striped, there are no notifiers for pedestrians or motorists of the crosswalk.
