If I could give this store a rating below zero, I would. I had a very disappointing experience at Belal Market today. My family usually shops at mewand in Fremont, but my cousin recently recommended Belal Market, so my mom, sister, and I decided to give it a try and support a different business.
When we got there, I asked for 5 breads, my mom asked for 5, and my sister asked for 10 — a total of 20 breads. The woman working in the bakery told us they didn’t have 20. However, my cousin (who was also with us) counted and pointed out that there were clearly more than 20 breads on the rack, and there was no one else in line before or after us.
When we mentioned that to the staff member, she said the bread was “for our customers.” That was confusing — weren’t we customers too? At first, I thought she was joking, so I tried to keep the tone light and asked again. But she insisted and told me to “go and call” — for what, I’m not sure. I told her I wasn’t the only one asking for 20 breads; there were three families there, and we were all planning to pay.
The whole experience felt rude and discriminatory. Needless to say, we won’t be returning.
