UPDATE: Came back to try the Wizards Lair and we were amazed by it. This room was completely different from The Attic as it was more high-tech and used less locks and keys. The room is well themed and the puzzles are very interactive. We enjoyed our entire time in the room and loved it so much that we booked We're All Mad Here right after.
In comparison to each other I enjoyed Wizards Lair a lot more due to the complexity of the puzzle and the design of the room. We escaped both of the rooms with about 20+ minutes to spare. As far as difficulty goes none of the rooms there are super hard, there's just so much stuff that you have to do you don't realize that you're getting through it fast, which we enjoyed.
Customer service this time was a lot better! The GM even brought us into The Attic afterwards to show us how they updated it since my last review and it looks like all the issues we had last time have been patched and fixed!
The only suggestion that I have is to rephrase the story for the Wizards Lair, specifically the "black handle" part as it spoils a big part of the room.
Overall, I would still recommend this location to escape room beginners and moderate enthusiasts that are looking for a higher-tech room, specifically for the Wizards Lair room.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: On Valentines day my boyfriend and I decided to try Ultimate Escape room. We saw a Groupon for it and decided to book The Attic. Let me begin by saying; we did escape with 1.5 minutes left. We have collectively done ~20 rooms and escaped all of them.
When we got there we were greeted by a young man who handed us the waivers and then introduced us to our group. In the room it was us 2 and then 4 other randoms who had never done an escape room before. We were given the story of the room, emergency exit doors, and then a few overall rules. Once we were locked in the room we began our hunt for clues. We were stuck on the first puzzle for a while because no one was working together. My boyfriend and I were working on the puzzle but the others were still going around the room trying to make something out of nothing. Once we got through the first puzzle we were fairly quick in figuring out the next one. However once we figured that one we were greeted with two more puzzles which stumped us for a while. We had actually solved both of them quickly but didn't realized we had solved them because there was to audible sound or movement in the room to notify us that we had figured it out. *if you think you solved something closed the lock and try it again to make sure that the puzzle you are currently working on opened it, and not another puzzle*. Once we got over that hurdle we were fairly quick in figuring out the rest.
As far as red herrings go, there are a decent amount in this room. One locked item in the room needed about 3 keys to open it, but inside the item was not anything important in solving the room it was just story filler. Same goes with the "wall" *as to not spoil it* which we found near the end of the room, it was filled with unimportant filler information. If we had seen it earlier on in the room we probably would have been stuck on it for a while. One of the puzzles in the room we didn't even do. It would have given us a push to figuring out a puzzle which we had already done. But having not done it, we were stuck thinking that the items for it went to another puzzle.
The woman giving us our hints was great and didn't give us to direct answers but instead gave us pushes towards figuring it out ourselves. You are given unlimited hints for the room. The young man who was our host was not the friendliest person ever but it wasn't unbearable. Could have been because it was late on Valentines and he had other places he wanted to be.
Overall I would give this place 4 out of 5 stars. Deducting a star for the red herrings, pointless puzzles, and customer service. That being said though, we will be back for their 3 other rooms.
