We recently had a 5th birthday party for my son here. We have been to many NYKC parties at other locations. They are always fun and well-run, but this party really stood out. My son has sensory processing issues which can make it hard or him to focus in busy, noisy environments. I had asked him when planning the party if he thought NYKC would be too overwhelming for him, but he really wanted to have his party there. (He took a gymnastics class at the Park Slope location last year and loved it.) In the rush of planning, I didn't think to mention his disability while booking the party. I realized my oversight about 5 minutes before the party began, and told the woman running the activities, whose name was Christine. She completely took it in stride, promising me she would "just read his energy." Well, she certainly did. I have honestly never seen him more engaged in group activities. She started the party with a quiet pretend-play activity that tied into our space theme and helped him get focused, and then once they were in the gym, she kept the energy up and the kids playing happily with a succession of fun games. She was so kind, attentive, and interesting, and has a beautiful singing voice to boot. (Apparently, she's an opera singer when not doing kids' classes!) As the parent of a sensory kid who sometimes has a tough time in school, it really touched my heart to see him enjoying his party so much and completely participating with his peers. The whole event was extremely well-run, and the utmost of convenience for my husband and me. They even boxed up the leftover food and cake for us to take with us when we left! Parties here are NOT cheap, but to us, it was worth every penny.
