The Preserve was saved by its citizens from becoming a Bechtel-Shell LNG plant in the early 2000's by a citizens committee that led the city into the largest protest fight in its history. It was managed by a trust and almost exclusively Myran Hayes who...Read More

This was SO fun! Our whole family did the walk/hike. Most of path is paved, except for a few off-shoot trails. We brought our grandson in the stroller. Be sure to bring water. Lovely views of the bay. So much history here. An 1800's cementary....Read More

We went here on a hot weekend in June (high of 100). Beautiful place to walk around. Interesting dynamic and group of people running the place. Everyone is really nice and there's a lot of character. Watch out for rattlesnakes. When we were there, someone's dog...Read More

Easy to moderate out-and-back walk/hike from the pin to the top of the island. Fantastic views await you. Lots of benches along the way if you tire easily. Periodic shade. Just past the parking lot you will find a well-groomed cemetery.

A very nice place to visit but we couldn’t find much information. Note that the location of this pin is just a parking space with porta potties - there isn’t a visitor centre or any facilities here otherwise. Also, the former campsite is closed permanently and it...Read More

This place is definitely worth a visit! Its not crowded at all (this is a good thing) and the views from the top of Carquinez Strait and Mare Island Naval station are worth the short, easy hike up on a paved road mostly. Take...Read More

What a great, easy, up hill hike. Hiking on this small piece of the original Mare Island is worth while and rewarding. There is a restroom half way to the apex of the hike. There are old bunkers to explore. At the peak there is...Read More

This is the best kept secret of the North Bay. A wonderful place to take your dog. And island that is frozen in history. It says if the entire place was abandoned at once including an 18-hole Golf Course. Lots of Critters including enormous jackrabbits....Read More

One of the best places to hike and walk in the area! Egrets, Osprey, and many other cool birds nest nearby. Great views, cool plants and trees and fungi!

This is nice historical area. It contains the old officer housing and the great St. Peter's Chapel with its Tiffany windows. Mare Island was the first U.S. Navy Shipyard on the west coast, when in 1854 David Farragut became it first commander. A number of...Read More
