Beautiful plantation.
Take the Slavery to Freedom tour. I am a local tour guide downtown (unaffiliated with Magnolia,) and slavery is one of the hardest subjects to discuss. There is a gravity and delicate nature to discussing the horrors of our area’s past. An Irishman named John gave the tour and it was informative, respectful, riveting, and most important real. He didn’t sugar coat, he didn’t sensationalize, he didn’t blame, he simply painted a picture of what the lives of slaves were like in a time when people were treated as property. He told the facts and told them well. In a world where many fear to discuss the sins of the past, and where some prefer to pretend they didn’t exist in the first place, John shares and honors the history of an oppressed people who built the beauty that stands there today.
The boat and the train tours were both fun ways to hear a little history and see some of the local wildlife.
This is a solid option for people who don’t want to walk too much. My parents are in their golden years, and long walks can be a problem. They were able to enjoy their day at Magnolia Plantation.
Also there is a cat!
