Access: US180 is 4.5 miles of dirt road with MANY potholes. Honestly not bad though, just have to go super slow. We made it in a camper in the snow and was sliding around on ice so don’t recommend that. Car would be fine. It does have a gate just off the Hwy but it was open.
Route 40 is 7.5 miles of dirt road, straight, flat and slightly less pot holes. Car would also be fine. This route is better if there is snow!
Big parking lot, bathrooms closed in winter. Walk to the cave maybe 2-3 minutes.
The cave is SUPER cool. The temperature ranges from 32°-40° (0°-4°) year round. The cave is coldest at the opening and gets warmer further in. It’s not as cold as it sounds as there’s no chilly wind like outdoors. HIKING BOOTS highly recommended. Plus a coat and gloves. Do NOT do this in anything open toed or fancy. Would be super easy to hurt an ankle. You have to watch every step for about 90% of the cave. I’d agree the first 10 minutes is the hardest and yes, there’s parts where I’d about 3’ tall. When you see the split, the left side is easier.
We’re adventure people and we found it easy but due to the footing, there’s no rushing it. It took us 70 minutes and that included finding a small cave at the entrance on the other side and exploring that too.
