As Halloween is almost upon us, it’s time to spend the upcoming weeks munching on popcorn and watching as many spooky Halloween movies as possible. I know that not all of us out there are big scary movie fans (like myself), so in the list below, you’ll find not only bone-chilling Halloween classics, but also some great fall stories that are sure to make you laugh. So grab your pumpkin spiced latte and your Halloween candy and start binging!
THE SHINING (1980)
If you don’t watch the movie adaptation of the famous Steven King novel at least once every Halloween, what are you doing? Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, a writer who agrees to house-sit at a creepy hotel during its winter off-season. Jack, along with his wife (played by Shelley Duvall) and child, find themselves with a terrible case of cabin fever, along with a few other spooky surprises. You think you’ve been scared after the first surprise, or the second, or the third? Well, you got a few more coming. Watch this movie on HBO Max or Amazon Prime. Chances are, during the spooky season, you might even get to watch it in a local theater near you!
28 DAYS LATER (2002)
Now what better way is there to spend Halloween night than worried there’s a zombie apocalypse happening outside? Just kidding! But there is a great movie you can watch with a similar theme, and hopefully it won’t keep you up too late at night. Cillian Murphy, who plays Jim, wakes up from a long coma to find his entire city deserted. Jim discovers a group of a few other survivors and joins them all on the run from the zombies that surround them. You can watch this movie on Amazon Prime also!
GET OUT (2017)
Young African American Chris has finally reached the stage in his relationship to meet his girlfriend, Rose’s, parents. He joins her on a weekend getaway and notices her parents’ attempts at being over accommodating and overbearing. At first he shakes this off as them trying to reason with their daughter for being in an interracial relationship, but that quickly takes a turn as many disturbing discoveries are made, leading to a very ugly truth. You can watch this spooky movie on Amazon Prime or Netflix.
HOCUS POCUS (1993)
Now for those who can’t stand horror movies, Hocus Pocus is a great family friendly classic to binge this October. It is a classic Halloween watch that revolves around the story of a teenager named Max who moves to Salem, Massachusetts. Max and his sister Dani have a classmate named Allison, who accidentally resurrects three witch sisters who were hanged during the Salem witch trials in the 17th century. The witches try to steal the lives of these three children to remain immortal, and the teens must work together to prevent drama and calamity from occurring on their first Halloween in Salem! You can watch this classic on Disney Plus or even at a local theater near you!
THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993)
No time like right now to get in the Christmas spirit, right? I know some people hate even thinking about Christmas until November comes to an end, but for those of us singing Jingle Bells all year-round, what better way to get excited for two of the best holidays. This movie is an animated dark fantasy film that tells the story of Jack Skellington. He is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, but grows tired of the same old Halloween routine. He discovers Christmas Town and soon becomes obsessed with the idea of taking over the town. With help from his residents in Halloween Town, he goes out to bring his own version of Christmas to the world. Watch this animated classic on Disney Plus!
