The Importance of Self Awareness

What is Self-Awareness

We have all seen someone on a talent show or audition that is convinced that they will win with their amazing talent, but when they go to perform, you can’t help but cringe because of how unskilled they are. Those people need to gain more self-awareness of their skills. Self-awareness is the accurate perception of your character, emotions, beliefs, abilities, and motivations, and it is not just important for talent show auditions, but it is necessary for all aspects of life because, without self-awareness, you won’t know your strengths, weaknesses, or how to improve. 

At my work, there was once a guy who was interviewing for a high-up leadership position, and when they asked him what his weaknesses were, he sat there for five minutes trying to figure it out. In the end, he just looked at the interviewer and completely seriously said that he didn’t have any. He didn’t get the position. However, this story exemplifies why it is necessary to have self-awareness, because without it, you have no perception of reality, and it makes you look foolish in front of your team or potential employers.

Examine Your Weaknesses

One way to gain self-awareness is by honestly examining your weaknesses. No one is perfect, and there is nothing shameful in admitting a shortcoming in a specific area. Instead of a fatal flaw, you should view every weakness as a growing opportunity, which will eliminate the stigma around admitting a weakness. 

Know Your Strengths

Just like you need to analyze your weaknesses, you need to know where your strengths lie. By knowing your strengths, you will be able to know what your assets are and how to market yourself to potential employers. This will allow you to become more confident in yourself and what you can bring to the team. If you don’t try to examine your strengths, you will be more likely to either take on projects that you can’t handle or not step up into roles that you are capable of. By knowing your strengths, you will mitigate both of these outcomes, and therefore have more success in your job. 

Identify Your Strengths and Weaknesses

However, trying to sit down and identify your weaknesses and strengths can be a challenge. Instead, there are plenty of highly regarded personality tests and tools that will help you identify these areas. In addition, an honest conversation with your team, boss, or peers could be beneficial as long as it is done constructively. 

In conclusion, self-awareness is a critical aspect of your life because it has the power to influence so many of your decisions. By being self-aware, you will experience greater success.
