Let me preface this by saying: I wasn’t expecting the Ritz. I wasn’t even expecting its distant cousin. But can a traveler at least get something from this millennium? Walking into the Wyndham Garden Romulus felt less like checking into a hotel and more like stepping onto the set of Miami Vice 1984. The décor screamed “Don Johnson was here,” and not in a cool, retro-chic way.
That said, I have to give credit where it’s due…., the indoor courtyard was a pleasant surprise. It’s unexpectedly charming, like stumbling upon a rare gem in a thrift shop. Lush greenery, a peaceful vibe, and a little escape from the chaos outside. Honestly, it made me wish my room had followed the same theme. Instead, my room felt like it was stuck in an ‘80s fever dream, complete with questionable wood finishes and a bathroom that belonged in a museum. Was that dust? Or was the wood disintegrating before my eyes? Either way, it look as if it was on an archaeological dig. I halfway expected Indiana Jones to swing in…
The vibe? Think roadside motel meets tropical fever dream, if the tropics had been left out in the sun too long. It’s like the hotel got a memo about updates in the early ’90s and promptly shredded it.
On the bright side, the staff was polite, and the bed didn’t collapse under me. But come on, Wyndham….., if you can make the courtyard a mini paradise, surely you can extend that magic to the rooms?
In short, if you’re nostalgic for Miami Vice marathons, fascinated by time travel, or just want to hang out in a lovely indoor courtyard while avoiding your room, this might be the place for you. For the rest of us? Probably not.
