I booked a room through Airbnb and was really excited because of the positive reviews. We arrived late at night (approx 11.15pm) and checked in with the door code we had previously received.
We booked this apartment because it promised to be smoke free and I'm allergic to nicotine. Unfortunately, our room smelled like an ashtray mixed with a strong room spray to cover it up. After two minutes, my nose was swollen and my eyes were itchy and watering. My boyfriend could smell the smoke, too.
I reached out to the owners, without any response. I called their emergency number, and had to realize it's a Google Voice number. I left a message, but I did not receive a response or call back.
I understand it's in the middle of the night, but I find this absolutely unacceptable.
The owners ask you to remove your shoes before entering the motel room (fair) and warn you that they charge $250 if you smoke on the premises (fair), which is why I was so hopeful this would be a good stay. Simply spraying a room with air freshener does not constitute cleaning though.
I checked their positive Airbnb reviews and was surprised that quite a few guests' profiles show that they live in the area (Duluth, Minneapolis, ...). I should have done better research.
If you aren't sensitive to smoke even a bit, and will absolutely not need assistance of any kind, feel free to book this place. It's pretty clean and offers free parking.
Update: I received a response after approx. 12 hours. The rooms used to be smoking rooms for about 30 years and were updated in the recent years. The owners said they added a special paint that stops the smoke smells; but the smell is still lingering in my opinion and this isn't a non smoking facility.
