If you go for a soak make sure you request one of the three “lower tubs” and do NOT get stuck with one of the “upper tubs”. Upper tubs are not worth the money at all. I guarantee the folks leaving 5 star reviews were in the lower tubs with amazing views and complete privacy vs. the crappy upper tubs. The first time I went to shoji was magical and gorgeous, we had a tub with a full mountain/forest view with one entire wall that was open with a railing to peak over. You felt nestled and like you were on the edge of the mountain looking out. When I booked again, we were taken to our tub and I was so confused…our tub this time was connected to the check-in building. Instead of the full wall opened up to the forest it was all closed off except for a small open air window. Not nestled, did not feel private. You could hear noise from the building and it was so incredibly disappointing. NOT at all worth the money, a completely different experience than the lower tubs. I wish I would have asked for a refund right then but had friends in from out of town who had planned their visit around this special (and very expensive!) experience. Such a let down. I had no idea they even had the weird “upper tubs” with a partial view. When I expressed my disappointment I was politely told that I could have requested a lower tub…but nowhere on their website does it say anything about upper vs. lower tubs. The photos on their website site are all of the lower gorgeous tubs. It is incredibly misleading. The upper tubs should be half price, they are seriously so different and not at all worth the money. I am a local who thought Shoji was going to be a special place to celebrate and return to again and again. But my experience last time left me feeling so disappointed, misled, and frustrated. It was a waste of money. The folks working there were nice but they didn’t seem to understand or acknowledge the fact that the upper tubs are completely different than the lower tubs and just kept telling me I could have requested a lower tub. How can I do that if there’s no mention of this at all during booking?? Shoji, be honest with your guests: update your website to inform folks and change your pricing to reflect the difference in tubs. Call them full view vs. partial view.
