The worst Marriott experience we’ve ever had- and we’ve stayed at dozens across the globe.
We recently stayed at the Marriott Jacksonville Downtown for two nights to celebrate our engagement and drop off a family member at the airport. We’ve stayed at Marriott properties all over the world — London, Spain, Mexico, Thailand — and this was by far the most disappointing experience we’ve ever had.
From the moment we arrived, it was problem after problem:
• Surprise $38/night parking fee — not clearly disclosed at booking. It just says “parking.”
• The fitness center was closed for construction, which we were never informed about beforehand it has been moved for the mean time but not much of a gym.
• The pool area had no shade or drink service, and with a 4-month-old baby, that made it virtually unusable for us.
• Our room was visibly dirty, including a bathtub we had to clean ourselves before using.
• When we politely asked for a bottle of water at the front desk for our baby’s formula (as directed by the restaurant staff), we were told, “Only Elite Members get bottled water.” Truly ridiculous.
• The worst part: we woke up both mornings covered in bites, and even our infant had them by the second night. We didn’t leave the hotel grounds, so it’s unclear how else this could have happened.
• We also witnessed the valet curb someone’s Tesla and just drive off without saying a word. We ended up telling the owner ourselves.
We voiced our concerns and were sent a pest inspection report that (conveniently) found nothing- but no resolution, no refund, no real apology. Just a standard “sorry you feel that way” type of response.
We don’t usually leave reviews- and we’ve never had to write a complaint to a hotel before. But this pushed us too far. For the price we paid and the trust we had in the Marriott brand, this experience was inexcusable.
We won’t be returning to this property, and we strongly urge others- especially families- to think twice before booking here.
