I'll start by saying my bar ain't high; I'm too poor for that. Even so, I will never consider Extended Stay America again. According to multiple locals who've lived in Pensacola much longer than me, this location used to be good. Welp…
My 75 year old mom made her first transatlantic flight to visit my husband and me. Since we currently live with roommates, my mom booked a room for herself and me in this hotel for 6 days. The booking agency had checked with the hotel to make sure I was allowed to check in, since my mom would still be on the plane. They assured me I would, as I was on the reservation. When I came to check in, they started out refusing me, which meant not having a place to sleep for my mom. Her plane had a massive delay and she wouldn't arrive until around midnight. Eventually it got resolved, but it was a bad start.
"Short" summary of the rest of our stay:
All shelves and drawers were empty. We had to get basic things like the remote control (which didn't work), plates, cutlery etc. from the front desk. Power was extremely unstable (our phones often indicated it would take 48 hours to charge). Staff ranged from indifferent to downright rude (which is extremely rare in this town). The keys were constantly malfunctioning (when I say constantly, I mean having to attempt using them 5-20 times every single time). Water pressure was crazy low. The "grab and go breakfast" basically consisted of a cart stacked with plain instant oatmeal and grits, tiny pre-packaged muffins, tea bags, instant decaf, hot water, and something that didn't even smell like coffee, let alone taste like it.
But most of all… it was filthy. The carpets looked like no one had even tried to clean them in 20 years. The linoleum was sticky. The place smelled like wet dog. My mom's asthma and my allergies were having a ball.
Towels were fresh, beds were alright, table and two chairs functional, fridge worked like a charm and was clean. AC blew crazy hard but did its job so I shouldn't complain about it. But it was hard finding something positive, and that's very much unlike me.
